Symbol allotment has been completed among the contesting candidates in the general election of Haripur UP of Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila.
It is learned that on Friday, Upazila Election Officer and Returning Officer Sekandar Ali distributed symbols among the candidates in his office. Awami League nominee Manjurul Haque got the boat. Among the other 8 independent candidates, Abdullah Al Mansoor Sabuj got spectacles, Ashaduzzaman-Horse, Zahid Khan-Autorickshaw, Nafiul Islam Sarkar Jimmy-Motorcycle, Mozahrul Islam-Pineapple and Harun Aur Rashid got two leaves. In this election 8 candidates submitted nomination papers for the post of chairman. Later, during the selection process, the nomination papers of Mosharraf Hossain were considered void. According to the Upazila Election Office, a total of 69 candidates are vying for the post of general member with 51 general seats and 21 reserved seats.
It may be mentioned that on April 25, the Election Commission (Union Parishad Division) announced the schedule of Haripur UP due to the recent expiration of its term. According to him, the selection of nomination papers will be held on May 19, the symbol will be allotted on May 26 and the election will be held on June 15.
