Bangladesh’s frozen shrimp exports to the international market have been steadily declining. A study has shown that Venami shrimp currently occupy 72% of the world market. We have to compete with the remaining 26%. That is why there is no alternative to Venami shrimp farming to survive in the competition of world market. To this end, the Department of Fisheries recently allowed eight companies in the Khulna region to carry out experimental farming by importing Venami species of shrimp fry from Thailand in response to the demand of the government exporters. The eight authorized companies are MUC Foods, Fahim Sea Foods, Grotech Aquaculture Limited, Radiant Shrimp Culture, Ian Shrimp Culture, EFG Aqua Farming, JBS Food Products and Industries Limited and Pranti Aqua Kal. Meanwhile, Alhera Fisheries Project in Debhata, Satkhira, Rupsha Fresh Foods Limited and Gemini Sea Foods Limited in Khulna and Nalta Ahsania Fish Limited in Kaliganj, Satkhira are awaiting permission. If the infrastructure is reformed, these four companies will soon be allowed to cultivate Venami shrimp. In addition, four more companies have been allowed to cultivate Venami Shrimp in Cox’s Bazar. According to BFFEA sources, those who will start cultivating Venami shrimp soon. Meanwhile, an agreement was reached with the Ministry of Fisheries and Resources with the private development agency ‘Sushilan’. But after getting permission, Sushilon again handed over the responsibility to MUC Foods of Jessore BSCIC Industrial City. MUC Foods then started the Venami Pilot Project at the Khulna Pikegachha Saltwater Research Center under the Department of Fisheries and the Fisheries Research Institute. On March 31 last year, MUC Foods imported one million Venami fry from Thailand. Venami started shrimp farming in four ponds. Due to transit gap / transportation problems from Thailand to Pikegachha, 6 lakh 82 thousand fry survive. The result is a loss of 24%. The area of the pond is 1.61 hectare. Fishing starts from 92 days and ends in 109 days. The idea is to get it after 3 months. The total material is 13,898 kg. 6.62 metric tons per hectare. It is exported to Dubai at the rate of 500 rupees per kg. As part of the pilot project it is being cultivated in the second phase to provide some guidance or more intensive monitoring during the observation period. Sometimes there is a delay due to low salinity. Later in the financial year 20-2021, on the night of May 10, MUC Foods brought 12 lakh fry in the same manner. 9 lakh 8 thousand 2 hundred and 84 pona survivors died. Manager Surendranath Mandal said work was supposed to start in 2019 after getting permission, but it was delayed due to low salinity and global corona epidemic. If there is a possibility of production 3 times a year, for various reasons, in ’21, I leave the fry and succeed. CPB India food is imported from India. Productivity will increase if the government can cultivate small ponds, Venami shrimps in small ponds as well as commercial bagdars instead of government pilot projects. Since there is good demand in the market, earning foreign exchange will be more. “If there are problems in other countries, including neighboring India, we should not have them,” he said. Pabitra Kumar, senior fisheries officer of Paikgachha upazila, said the government had given permission to a private company to cultivate Venami shrimp on a trial basis. We are helping them in this work. In order to prevent any damage to the environment, pike is being cultivated at the salt water research center. Venami shrimp will be cultivated experimentally first in one pond and then in four ponds. He further said that if the hatchery owners could make pona and food with their mother in local technology without importing pona from abroad, then other expenses including transportation would be saved. There will be a revolutionary change in agriculture. Venami is cheaper than Bagdar or can be bought and eaten by any family for its easy availability. The quality of the soil in the study is not the same as that of Venami shrimp. Must be interested in adopting modern technology to make farming suitable. Government, private entrepreneurs, farmers as a whole should be interested, must come forward. According to shrimp farmers and exporters, there is no alternative to ‘Venami’ shrimp farming in the interest of sustaining the shrimp industry, one of the main sources of foreign exchange in the country. Only Venami can keep the world competitive by expanding the country’s shrimp industry. He sought the government’s intervention to expose commercial ‘Venami’ shrimp farming and export through a simple policy. Shrimp expert Prafulla Sarkar (Retd. Deputy Director, Fisheries Inspection and Quality Control) said that the samples were tested for 7 consecutive days to check the growth and diseases of the shrimp. Although there has been some apprehension of high temperatures this year, regular observations have shown that the shrimp’s disease resistance and viability are much higher than those of Bagdar. Although there is a high risk of contracting the disease for 49 days after the release of the fry, it was not seen in the project. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association has mentioned in a statistic that out of the total 256,039 metric tons of frozen shrimp in Bangladesh in the fiscal year 2019-20, 33,363 metric tons were exported. Earned ৮৮ 306.75 million in foreign exchange. In the fiscal year 2020-21, exports decreased by another two million. The average production per hectare of ‘Venami’ shrimp in neighboring India is 6,102 kg. In other words, the production of ‘Venami’ is 6,081 kg more per hectare than that of Bagdar. Evidence of which has been found
