In Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj, the people have been relieved as the construction of Baniayan canal has started to remove the water blockage of 405 hectares of land.
According to the BADC office, the Baniayan canal in Kazipur has been filled and about 405 hectares of land in the area has been turned into a crop land for almost a decade and a half. In this context, Jatiya Sangsad Member and Central Committee Vice-President of Swechchhasebak League Tanvir Shakil Joy and Upazila Chairman Khalilur Rahman Siraji took the matter seriously and took steps to excavate the Baniayan canal. And through communication with various government departments, digging of about 8 km of canals under Panasi project last year also resulted in good results in drainage.
This year, under the Panasi project, excavation of 11,900 km of canals has been started in the second phase at a cost of about Tk 2 crore. Visiting Barshibhanga area of Chalitadanga Union on Saturday, it was seen that excavation work of Baniayan canal is going on. Excavations are being carried out at a width of 6.05 feet and a depth of 6 feet. However, there is confusion among the locals as to whether the excavated canal is being deepened properly as there is water in it.
In this regard, surveyor Abul Qasim said, the canal has been surveyed in the dry season, so the excavation will come out only after re-surveying after cutting the soil. Mizanur Rahman, Assistant Engineer, Kazipur Office, BADC, shared the same view. Mizanur Rahman said that another 6 km excavation work is in process this year. Kazipur Upazila Chairman Khalilur Rahman Siraji said, “Insha Allah, I will save the whole of Kazipur from waterlogging with the help of MP Mahday, keeping in mind the loss of locals.”
