Jute has been cultivated in 18,940 hectares of land in Sirajganj this year. Due to favorable weather conditions, jute cultivation has improved in the district this year. Now the farmers are spending their time busy in jute care. This year, farmers are not worried about jute wake up as it has been flooded a little earlier than other years. Farmers say that if jute is added to the flood water, its quality is good and the price is good.
Tosha, Mechta and local varieties of jute have been cultivated in the district. Due to the increase in the price of jute, farmers in different parts of the district have become interested in jute cultivation over the last few years. Besides, the price of jute is also known to be quite good. But at one time the farmers almost did not get the price of jute and gave up jute cultivation.
Jute farmers say that it is cultivated by borrowing. Farmers are happy with good yield this time.
Hasan Ali, a jute farmer from Bagbati village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila, said he has cultivated jute on 4 bighas of land. This time the jute is better. He hoped that this year’s jute yield would be fairly good. Abid Ali, a farmer from Ratan Kandi village, said, “Jute has got good yield this time. I hope the amount of jute that has been planted in the land at present will be good. Farmers in the area also said that it costs 14-15 thousand rupees to cultivate jute on one bigha of land. Jute production is 12-14 manas per bigha. There is a good money gain in spending.
Sirajganj Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Rostam Ali said jute has been cultivated in about 350 hectares of land in Sadar Upazila. He said various counseling and training arrangements have been made to make the farmers interested in jute cultivation. Tarash Upazila Agriculture Officer Lutfunnahar Luna said jute cultivation has increased a lot this time as compared to last time. Last year it was 595 hectares and this time it has increased to 745 hectares. We have provided all kinds of technical advice and assistance to the farmers.
Shaminur Islam, deputy assistant agriculture officer of Sirajganj Agriculture Extension Department, said jute has been cultivated in 18,940 hectares of land in the district this year. Compared to last year, jute cultivation is much more this time. If the weather is favorable, I hope good jute yield in the district this year.
