A total of 70 candidates have filed nomination papers for the upcoming general elections in Haripur UP of Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila, including 7 for the post of chairman, 51 for the post of general member and 21 for the reserved seat.
According to the schedule announced till 5 pm on Tuesday, the contesting candidates submitted their nomination papers in the office of the Upazila Election Officer and Returning Officer Sekendar Ali, who has been appointed to conduct the general elections in the said UP. The nominees for the post of chairman are Awami League nominee Manjurul Haque, all the others are independents. They are Nafiul Islam Sarkar Jimmy, Mozaharul Islam, Zahid Khan, Mosharraf Hossain, Asaduzzaman Harun-ur-Rashid and Abdullah Al Mansur Sabuj. Due to the recent expiration of the term, on April 25, the Election Commission (Union Parishad Election) announced the schedule of Haripur UP. According to him, selection of nomination papers will be held on May 19, symbol allotment on May 26 and election on June 15. It may be mentioned here that 9 candidates for the post of chairman and 9 candidates for the post of general member collected 52 nomination papers but 8 candidates for the post of chairman and 51 candidates for the post of general member submitted their nomination papers.
