The special budget meeting has approved the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2022-23 to be presented in the National Assembly. The special cabinet meeting was held at noon on Thursday (June 9) under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Earlier, the meeting started at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban after 12 noon. Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and other members of the cabinet took part in it.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal will present the national budget today for the fourth time in a row. This time he will present a budget proposal of Tk 6 lakh 8 thousand 84 crore. This is the 23rd budget of the present government and the 51st budget of Bangladesh and the fourth budget of the current finance minister. In the budget for the next 2021-22 fiscal year, various steps are being taken to tackle the economy after the corona virus.

This year’s budget will announce measures to control inflation. It has set an inflation target of 5.6 percent. Besides, agriculture, health, human resources, employment and education will be given priority in the budget. Marginalized people of the country will get authority in the budget. The Ministry of Finance said in a press release that this year’s budget is a combination of the government’s past achievements and the current situation.

The deficit in the new budget has been fixed at Tk 2,45,064 crore. This is 5 and a half percent of GDP. The deficit in the main budget of the current financial year was Tk 2,14,071 crore. The government will have to rely more on the banking sector to meet the budget deficit in the new financial year. The target for taking net loan from this sector is one lakh six thousand 334 crore. Of this, the amount of long-term debt is Tk 8,192 crore. Short term loan of Tk 36,142 crore will be taken. The target for borrowing from banks in the current financial year is Tk 8,452 crore.
