Hundreds of thousands of people from Rangpur, Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts are passing through the ditches every day. There is a demand to complete the construction work of the road as soon as the risk of accidents increases.
This road is from Velupara to Rajendra Bazar on the Rangpur-Kurigram Regional Highway in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur. Although the work started in the second week of February this year, it has yet to return to the 5.10 km road. On the contrary, the road has not been completed for a long time and the road has become dilapidated due to light rain.
It was seen on the spot that the road from Velupara to Rajendra Bazar was completely muddy. This road is now full of potholes after the carpeting of this road was started and new work started. The condition of the road is now dilapidated due to storms and rains in the last few days. The whole road is muddy. When the sun shines brightly, the road is covered with dust and sand. In this situation, people and vehicles of three districts are moving on this highway every day. The risk of accidents is increasing with the suffering.
Locals complained that the road repair work was going on very slowly due to the negligence of the contractor. Half of the work has not yet been completed due to lack of supervision by RHD officials. Every day the people of the three districts have to walk on these 5 kilometers of broken and muddy roads and come and go in different modes of transport. Sometimes a small accident happens when the foot slips on the broken road or the car overturns. If the work is not completed soon, the road will become a death trap in the coming monsoon.
It has been learned that the construction cost of 5.10 km road from Velupara to Rajendra Bazar on the Rangpur-Kurigram regional highway of Kauniya has been estimated at around Tk 12 crore. According to the agreement, the construction work will be completed on June 23 this year. The road is being constructed under the supervision of Rangpur Roads and Highways Department by Naogaon-based contractor Mohammad Aminul Haque (Pvt.) Ltd. The road was somehow made passable with rollers, VT sand and stones. But after a few days of rain, the condition of this road is now deplorable. Thousands of vehicles and millions of people have suffered in this. Vehicles and pedestrians are moving at risk.
On their way to Rangpur’s Mahiganj Satmatha area, motorcyclists Nazrul and Rubel Islam said it had become extremely difficult to transport heavy goods and transport emergency patients. The way this road is being worked, it is difficult to understand when the work will be completed. However, if the work is completed quickly, there will be relief from suffering.
Mokhlesur Rahman, driver of Kurigram-bound Al-Imran Paribahan, said it was too risky to drive on the road. Passengers are in trouble. Young drivers like us have more problems driving on such potholed roads. Work on this important road should be completed as soon as possible. This will reduce the risk of accidents. The suffering and misery of the passengers will be reduced.
A number of Dhaka-bound bus drivers and assistants said that sometimes they have to travel on this road with dust, sometimes with brick powder and sometimes with mud. More than three kilometers of the whole road is filled with potholes. Passengers are suffering due to misery. But we have nothing to do. Despite the misery, we have to travel long distances with regular cars.
Shafiqul Islam was going to Rangpur on a motorcycle from Kanthalbari in Kurigram. He is a musician and lyricist of Rangpur Betar. He has to use this road regularly. It used to take 30-35 minutes to go from Teesta to Rangpur. And now it is taking more than an hour because of the dilapidated condition of the road.
No contractor Mohammad Aminul Haque (Pvt) Ltd. was found in the project area. He did not receive a call when he tried to talk to the contractor by collecting a mobile phone number. Later, he visited the office of the Deputy Assistant Engineer of Road Branch-1 (Road Sub-Division-1) Rangpur RHD at Teesta Stack Yard and talked to Shakil Ahmed, a representative of the contractor.
Expressing grief over the suffering of the people, Shakil Ahmed said that work on five kilometers of road was started in February. So far Base Type One has been completed. Besides, two kilometers of the binder have already been completed within five kilometers. So far it has not been possible to start working course, carpeting and road marking. Other work will start when the remaining three kilometers of the binder are completed. However, he claimed that 80 percent of the road has been completed.
Rangpur Roads and Highways Department Executive Engineer Mahabub Alam said the work is ongoing. The contractor is scheduled to complete the work by June 23. However, the road has been in a dilapidated condition due to rain for the last two days. We have also talked about this with the contractor. They will finish the rest of the work as soon as the hostile weather subsides.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Millions of people have fallen into extreme misery due to the dilapidated condition of only five kilometers of road.
